Synopsis:
Northside is a documentary film that explores the comparative experiences of new Americans who have settled on Syracuse's Northside over the last 100 years. Drawing from the stories of a recently resettled Somalian refugee and two first generation Italian-Americans, the film questions the politics of space, memory, and belonging - and presents both the similarities and differences in the struggle to adapt to new ways of being across culture and time.
Reception:
Northside premiered at the 2015 Syracuse International Film Festival and was followed by a panel discussion that included many voices from the community. While the message of the film was well received by most, several members of the Italian American community that still live on the northside of the city felt the film failed to include all populations of that area - specifically African Americans.
